With no Monarch team action over the weekend Birmingham riders were involved in a busy weekend of racing in Wolverhampton. Saturday saw the Dash Trophies day of racing on Saturday in Wednesfield whilst on Sunday it was over to East Park for the 3rd round of the Battle of Britain.
Steve and Kate Mullinder of Dash Trophies had a busy day of action in store for the Under 12’s, juniors, women and veterans. Connor Steel took part in an extremely tough U12 line up and was in contention throughout. A final race gate 1 should have ensured a podium place with a win but a missed pedal saw him stranded at the back and a finishing tally of 12 points. The meeting won on a 20 point maximum by Harry Radford.
In the Veterans Mark Winwood was left rueing a costly mistake in his 4th outing to finish on 16 points, agonisingly one point off a rostrum place. Paul Timms and Steve Hodgkinson also both rode scoring 10 and 8 respectively. Home rider Mark Griffiths was unbeaten on 20 points.
In the Juniors Ewan Hancox was always in contention for a podium finish but a lapse of concentration in his 4th race saw him slip from 1st to 3rd, a 4th place finish overall on 16 points his reward. Home star Brandon Whetton took victory on a maximum. The women’s event was won by Poole rider Macie Schmidt.
Birmingham had 4 riders representing the Midlands in East Park on Sunday in the Battle of Britain competition with a sizable crowd on a glorious day. The Midlands took victory in both the junior and senior team events and have now won all 3 rounds so far.
Ewan Hancox raced to a superb 12 point maximum in the juniors whilst it was mixed results in the seniors with Ricki Johnson racing to 15 points, Chris Timms took 3 falls on his way to 10 whilst Winwood had a day to forget with 3 points.
This weekend sees the Monarchs back in Midland League action with a visit from Leicester on Sunday, start time 1pm with the juniors, seniors 2pm. The mini Monarchs travel to Kesgrave on Saturday for round 1 of the YJL Nationals competition.
